Medina High grad wins junior college regional wrestling title

Medina High graduate and Niagara County Community College sophomore Eric Velez captured the 125 pound title at the Region 3 wrestling championships this afternoon at NCCC.

Velez decisioned Mike McCarthy of Jamestown Community College 14-4 in the title bout to earn a trip to the National Junior College Athletic Association national championships.

Velez, who is 29-6 on the second, scored a quick pin of 1:15 in his semifinal bout.

During his scholastic days at Medina High, Velez twice placed third at the state championships. He was also a two-time Section VI and three-time Niagara-Orleans League champion.
